Engine refit and pedestal seats on a Dell Quay.

23 February 2023

I am working on Dell Quay 15ft boat for a customer who wants a new engine putting on the boat. The old engine was tiller steer 6hp and its replaced by a new 10hp Tohatsu electric start 4 stroke outboard on remotes.

There was no internal transom plate on the inside of the transom so I added a 300mm x 100mm 3mm stainless plate with a lip along the top edge. The lip prevents the engine from jumping off the transom if the clamps come loose although this engine is bolted on as well.

The steering cable hole is drilled in the side of the splash well as is the hole for the control cables, ignition cable and the  electric start cables.I bolted on the engine sealing the holes with sikaflex and ran the cables.

The control cables are long enough to  form a loop before they are connected to the engine.I have cut a hole in the port side of the splash well to allow the steering arm to travel through.

The pedestals need to be screwed onto the floor so you need to add a timber plate to the floor.I use a 12″ square top plate of 18mm marine ply with two other layers of plywood underneath it to help level it out.As the timber needs to be bonded to the floor the old floor paint and gel coat need to be ground off.I allow a 4″overlap for the glass fibre to stick to the floor of the boat.

The console is bolted onto the side of the boat and its bottom leg is glassed onto the floor.I flow coated over the pedestal pads they just need the grey floor paint touching up.I used 25mm no 6 screws to hold the checking first they were not too long. Also check the seats will turn 360% without catching the outboards remote control box.

Thats it finished as the owner is putting his own seats on.
